IMPORTANCE OF SKIN
The skin covers the external surface of the body and is the largest organ of the body in both surface area and weight. In adults, the skin covers an area of about 2 square meters and weighs 4.5–5 kg that is about 16% of total body weight.
However, the skin consists of two main parts. The superficial, thinner portion, which is composed of epithelial tissue, is the epidermis. The deeper, thicker connective tissue portion is the dermis. Deep to the dermis, but not part of the skin, is the subcutaneous layer. Also called the hypodermis (hypo-below), this layer mainly consists of adipose tissues. The subcutaneous layer serves as a storage depot for fat and contains large blood vessels that are sensitive to pressure.
The skin performs several important functions in our body and hence it can surely be regarded as one of the most important organs of the human body.
However, just like any other organ of our body, skin is also quite exposed to suffer from several different diseases and now we will try to have a look at some of these diseases of skin.
