Atorvastatin is a medicine that comes under the drug group known as statins. The drug is used to lower down bad cholesterol in the bloodstream that includes LDL and triglycerides while it increases the good cholesterol that includes HDL.

However, it does not control cholesterol level if the patients do not follow a proper diet.

Uses:

Atorvastatin works to lower down the amount of cholesterol that the liver produces.

The patients who are seeking therapy with this particular medicine must take an integrated approach to lower down their cholesterol such as going on a low-fat diet,controlling their weight if they are obese, and stop smoking to get maximum benefit of the drug.

If you’re on a combination treatment for cholesterol, do not take the medicine with another cholesterol controlling medicine. Always take Atorvastatin either one hour before the other drug or after four hours of taking the other drug.

You can take the medicine with or without food as per the instruction of your doctor.

A special instruction to keep in mind while taking atorvastatin is not to take it with grapefruit juice or grapefruit.

Dosage:

The usual dosage of the drug is 20 mg per day which can increase up to 80 mg per day.

The patients with no response alone to diet sometimes can receive the initial dosage of 40 mg per day. However, this is not a usual dosage and is only prescribed to patients who have much higher cholesterol levels.

In addition to cholesterol reduction, it is a preventive drug for cardiovascular patients against heart attack.

The maximum dose one can receive is 80 mg per day.

Side effects:

There can be varied side effects of the medicine ranging from stomach issues such as diarrhea, nausea and vomiting to headache, light-headedness.

Other side effects include chest pain that is angina. In addition to these, the medicine can have an impact on the musculoskeletal system such as causing painful muscle spasms or spasms without pain, inflammation of the muscles, and weakness of the muscles.

Besides these side effects, sometimes people can experience upper respiratory tract problems such as a cold, sore throat or a runny nose.

All the mentioned side effects are not necessary to occur, and there can be severe side effects such as allergic reactions to the medicine in some cases.

Precautions:

These symptoms indicate liver damage.

The drug is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers and has shown negative impact on the fetus and the infant. Any woman who is trying to conceive should not take this drug.
