However, the process of taking this medicine is quite plain and simple. You can take this medicine via mouth with or without food. This medicine can be taken either with water or milk.

Dosage

The dosage of this medicine will be recommended by your doctor after assessing your current health condition and he is the one who is entitled to give you the recommendation of a dosage but the highly recommended and the the most recommended Dosage across the world by registered medical practitioners is three times a day. It is also recommended to use it for long periods of time to get better results. However, one should never start a self treatment and set a dosage for one self according to their own thinking. There is a reason that the government has given doctors the license to practice their trade and such decisions should always stick with doctors.

Side Effects Of Baclofen

There are not many usually occurring side effects of Baclofen and 80 % of the people do not have to go through any of these side effects and they just get the relief by using medicine without facing any side effects.

However, there should be knowledge of these side effects and at first sight of such symptoms, what you need to do is to contact your doctor as soon as possible and let him know about the condition that you are facing.

Some of the side effects are as under.

  1. It can cause Nausea.
  2. It can cause headache and weakness of muscles as well.
  3. Sometimes, it can cause skin rashes as well and Antibiotics are required to be used to treat them.
  4. It can make you dizzy.
  5. It can make you sleepy and drowsy at the same time.

Precautionary Measures To Take

  1. Do not overdose or under dose yourself.
  2. Follow the instructions of the doctor or pharmacist at all costs and never try to be a doctor yourself.
  3. Always look out for the several interactions it can make and avoid using incompatible drugs at the same time.
  4. Avoid using Alcohol or Marijuana when you are taking Baclofen.

Baclofen is a drug that is used to treat muscle stiffness in case of multiple sclerosis or any other muscle disease. In controlled doses, it works as a muscle relaxant.

Uses:

Baclofen is a skeletal muscle relaxant that is prescribed in conditions such as multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries.

This drug works on the spinal cord nerves and reduces the number of spasms and stiffness of the tightened muscle.

It works as a pain reliever and also helps increase the reduced movement of a muscle caused by a spasm.

Dosage:

Baclofen therapy is usually carried out in gradual increments.

The lowest adult dosage is 15 mg divided into 3 doses per day.

Baclofen usually requires a trial testing to adjust dosage.

Its doses are gradually increased if a patient is not getting relieved.

After supplementing with 5 mg thrice a day, your doctor increases it to 10 mg thrice a day, then 15 mg thrice a day till 20 mg thrice a day.

However, the maximum dose for an adult is 80 mg per day.

In case, the maximum dose also doesn’t work then the doctor will gradually withdraw the medicine.

Sudden withdrawal of Baclofen may lead to serious side effects, so it should be avoided.

The medicine is not tested on children, so there’s no prescribed dosage for children.

Side Effects:

Baclofen can cause a number of side effects in the treated patients. It can cause vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, bloody stool and increased urination.

Other side effects include drowsiness, weakness and fatigue.

In some cases, Baclofen can cause neurotic reactions such as depression, euphoria, hallucinations or epileptic seizures.

Blurred vision, confusion, tingling or numbing of organs can also be experienced by some patients who are on Baclofen.

There is a chance of having allergic reactions to inactive ingredients of this medicine that can lead to a rash, swelling of the tongue or limbs and an abnormal weight gain.

Balofen can also cause hypotension, chest pain and palpitation in some patients.

Even with this long list of side effects, if your doctor has prescribed Baclofen, he perceives the medicine to have more benefits to you than the side effects.

Precautions:

Baclofen causes drowsiness, so driving should be avoided while on Baclofen therapy.

The drug can cause dis balance in the posture due to its sedative effect, so using heavy machinery while taking Baclofen should also be avoided.

Doctors do not recommend this drug to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers due to the lack of clinical evidence for its positive impact on the above mentioned conditions.

People with renal impairment should be prescribed with Baclofen with extreme care due to its side effects such as excessive or reduced urination.

Baclofen should not be used while the patient is on alcohol or marijuana.

In the case of over dosage, there may be a clear disorientation symptom in the patient.

Emesis is the first line of action in this case while stomach wash (lavage) is the second option for clearing out the medicine completely from the body.
